Getting Out of Your Comfort Zone

Many people will struggle with this aspect of dancing. Whether it's arm styling, hip motion, or just getting the confidence to ask someone to dance, you are probably going to have to try something that makes you feel uncomfortable at first. And that's a good thing! Overcoming that sort of barrier will make you a more confident person and a better dancer. We build our community around being considerate and patient with others. Our classes and dance parties offer a great environment to experiment and learn new moves, styles, and techniques.

Proving Yourself Wrong

Sometimes, what holds us back the most in life is the view we have of ourselves. When we think we don't belong or we see ourselves as not good enough, we can miss out on incredible experiences and memories. The journey away from that mindset starts with a simple decision that you can do something regardless of whether or not you think you're good at it.

So often we hear new students joke about how they think they will be so bad we might tell them to leave. Although this is usually a joke, it can show where our minds are often at when it comes to starting something new.

Meeting New People

Dancing will often push you out of your comfort zone. But what's beyond your comfort zone? Confidence! Because you overcame something you thought you couldn't. Meeting other people that share your hobby and that have spent time learning similar skills can be great for your confidence. Every dancer has a story about how long it took them to learn this type of turn or that certain timing for a move. Always keep in mind that growing in skill is a constant process: every dancer has something they could learn from you just as much as you have something you could learn from them, no matter what level you are at.

Expressing Yourself

Becoming comfortable in your own skin is easier said than done. Learning how to dance can be very helpful in learning to love how you look. When you learn techniques and start successfully doing different dance moves and styles, it can change how you see yourself. With ballroom dancing, you get to have fun and achieve something you're working hard at. That in itself is a game changer when it comes to self confidence.

It can be awkward for some to express how they feel at first when getting used to dancing. You may not be sure what to do with your free arms or where to look when you start out dancing. But when you get used to it, dancing can be an amazing outlet for self-expression.

Moving Past Failure

Moving past your failures is arguably one of the hardest things in life. Dance can teach you incredible resilience in the face of the minor social faults that often paralyze us. Being rejected for a dance, messing up a dance move, stepping on someones toes... these are all things that every dancer has had to overcome to learn and enjoy the hobby. Remember that dancing is about respecting your partner, communicating with them, and having fun!

Learning something new can be discouraging at times.. but don't lose heart! Keep learning and growing and you'll surprise yourself and be able to do things you never thought you could!
