Many new dancers are ambitious and excited to start their new hobby, but they are unsure of how to get the most out of their dancing. They often ask whether to start out in a group setting or in a private lesson. To answer to this question you must first ask yourself what your goals are as a dancer and what kind of setting you are looking for.
Private Lessons
If you are just starting out and would like to learn quickly, it could be beneficial and cost-effective to start with private lessons. Private lessons allow you to have a one-on-one setting with an instructor and get all your questions answered about the dances you desire to pursue. Private lessons can help with retaining more of the information about the dances you are doing and give you more personalized suggestions to help you grow in your dancing. This environment is great for couples who wish to learn and dance with only each other as well as individuals who wish to grow in their skills one-on-one. If your goal is to perform or compete, private lessons are a great option to help you develop the skills necessary for more professional dancing.
Group Classes
Group Lessons are a lot of fun and give you a chance to try what you are learning with several different people. Dancing with several people allows you to experience leading and following from different people, which can expand your ability to communicate with your partner better. Dancing with several people can challenge you to become a better dancer since you are not relying on a specific lead or follow in order to dance a given pattern.
Why Not Both?
You can always do both! Doing both group classes and private lessons allows you to test out what you are learning in your private lessons with other dancers. That way, you can make sure you have your own technique solid before you try out your skills with someone else. Another benefit of doing both is having the advantage of asking your instructor for more clarification or in-depth detail on what you learned during your group class. Remember that the goal of dancing is to learn and have fun, and you can't go wrong with dancing, so pick whichever classes are most enjoyable for you and have a great time!
